Pain Management

Pain management physicians specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain. The goal of pain management is to improve the patient’s ability to function along with their overall quality of life.

Pain is defined as acute or chronic. Chronic pain, which is pain lasting greater than six months, can have a variety of underlying and overlapping causes. Likewise, pain can have several different origins, including myofascial, psychogenic, radicular and somatic. Myofascial pain is typically a nagging, burning pain. Psychogenic pain involves an underlying emotional cause. Radicular pain is caused by irritation of a spinal nerve root. Our team utilizes a group of highly trained pain management specialists that can provide a full range of treatments to diagnose and treat pain. These treatments can include physical and massage therapy, narcotics and pain patches and various types of injections to alleviate symptoms. Injections can include facet joint injections, epidural injections and selective nerve root injections. They are important treatments because they can not only help to improve the patient’s pain, but can also act as a guide to determine where the pain is coming from.

Medications
Anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers and narcotics in the form of oral pills and patches can be utilized to address pain.
*Please note that it is very important that any medications, prescription or otherwise, be placed in a secure location that is not accessible to minors.

Facet injections involve placing anti-inflammatory medications at the facet joints of the spine to reduce inflammation.

Epidural injections involve placing anti-inflammatory medications into a central area around the spinal nerve to reduce inflammation.

Selective Nerve Root injections involve placing medications specifically at a nerve root to reduce inflammation and improve or eliminate pain. This level is typically determined by the results of imaging studies
